The Rev. and Mrs. Lee Byers Jr., from 2011
The Shady Grove Baptist Church family will honor Rev. Dr. Lee Byers, Jr. and First Lady Esther Byers on their Tenth Pastoral Anniversary during a special service on Sunday March 13, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. The praise and worship service will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Speaking for the 4:00 p.m. occasion will be Bishop Charles JJ Jackson, Pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC. He will be accompanied by his choirs and congregation.
Rev. and First Lady Byers have served the Shady Grove Church family for ten years and are God’s servants for kingdom building. Pastor Byers serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association, member of the Thickety Mountain Association Trustee Board, President of the Thickety Mountain Non-Denominational Ministerial Alliance, member of the Greater Gaffney Ministerial Association, and an advisor to the Thickety Mountain Brotherhood Auxiliary. He is also a very active member and participant in all activities of the Cherokee County “Giving Back” Organization. Rev. Byers recently received the Doctor of Theology Degree from the Carolina College of Theology.
Rev. Dr. Byers is married to Esther Montgomery Byers of Gaffney, and they have five adult children and ten grandchildren. First Lady Byers serves as a member of the Shady Grove Deaconess and Women’s Ministry, the music ministry, and an advisor to the Young Women’s Auxiliary. She also serves as a Youth Supervisor and a member of the Thickety Mountain Ministers Wives Auxiliary.
The Youth Choir will provide special music during the morning worship service.

Miss South Carolina 2015 Daja Dial will be the guest speaker for the Black History Month Celebration to be held Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Gaffney High School.
The Clemson University student is the third African American to be crowned Miss South Carolina. She was a Top 7 finalist for the Miss America title in September 2015. She is a native of Jonesville, South Carolina.
The Rev. Antionette Gardner, a radio personality at WFGN 1180 will host the program. The Gaffney High School Honor Choir, Young Starz of Elite Dance, Shady Grove Praise Dance Team, Marsheka Wray and Ursula Anderson and other groups from the community are scheduled to perform.
The public is invited to attend. Admission is one or more canned good items, which will be donated to the Indian Hill Baptist Church Soup Kitchen.

Bro. John Burris was honored recently for being the oldest male member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. The former trustee, who is 86 years old, received a gift presented by Rev. Albert Gray and pastor, Rev. Lee Byers. Sis. Minnie Hush was also recognized as being the church’s oldest female member.

Shady Grove Baptist Church recognized its veterans during morning worship Nov. 8th to show appreciation for dedicated and loyal service to the United States of America. Each veteran received a flag pin engraved with their name and a small United States flag.
Deacon Lucious Jones read a “Proclamation of Appreciation” thanking them for the sacrifices they have made and for veterans and their families everywhere who continue to fight to keep our country free.

Nov. 11th of each year is the day designated to let veterans know that Americans deeply appreciate their commitment and bravery. This year, Americans are asked to burn a green light bulb on their porches, windows, and wherever they desire, to let veterans and their families know that we remember and appreciate their service to our country.

The Shady Grove Baptist Church Gospel Choir will celebrate their 45th singing anniversary during the Sunday morning worship service on November 15, 2015.
The guest speaker for this service will be Rev. Dewey Whittenburg, associate minister of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.

The Rev. Antoine Murray
Tragic news today of the passing of the Rev. Antoine Murray, a son of Shady Grove with family relations throughout the church family, including being the son-in-law of Dea. and Mrs. Arthur Dover.
The Rev. Murray was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Spartanburg and served in the youth ministry when he accepted the call to preach. In 2001, he joined Shady Grove Baptist Church, where he continued to minister. He attended Emmanuel Baptist College and American Baptist College and Seminary.

Shady Grove’s own Rev. London C. Knuckles will be honored by the 138th Annual Session of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association. The Rev. Knuckles, who died in June of this year, is being recognized for his 45 years of service to the Association.
The session will be held Sept. 26-30, 2015, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Gaffney. The Rev. Freddy Davidson is their pastor.
This year’s theme is “Envisioning the Future Exceptionally,” focusing on the process for progress, taken from Genesis 26:13, “The man began to prosper and continued prospering and he became very prosperous.”
The Rev. Tony Macomson is moderator of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association.

Rev. Hazel Logan Sr. will be the guest speaker for the Byers Family Reunion at Shady Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m.
Rev. Logan is the Associate Pastor of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Grover, N.C., under Senior Pastor William Thompson. He completed theological and seminary studies through the Gaston Baptist Association and was ordained in 1996.
